The war between those who prefer to have a jailbroken iPhone and Apple seems to be heating up with quicker and quicker updates coming from those jailbreaking developers, namely the unofficial iphone-dev team. This time, perhaps in an effort to show just how relevant the jailbreaking scene still is, the unofficial iphone-dev team made quick work of iPhone firmware 2.1 and released both an updated version of PwnageTool and QuickPwn. Coming in at just about the 24 hour mark are updated versions which are currently Mac only, however they did point out that “Windows won’t be far behind.”
So if you are looking to jailbreak firmware 2.1 and are running a Mac then you are currently in luck.
Below are the official Bittorent download links, but if you would prefer a direct (non-bittorent) download check the DevTeams post (link below) for a bunch of mirrors.
It seems that some people have recently taken issue with just how relevant the jailbreak still is, especially since the iPhone 3G still cannot be unlocked. According to the DevTeam’s website they have stated that “Some of the popular press and blogs have been backing the opposition. :-)” I would say this comment, or a big portion of it is coming courtesy of Thomas Ricker via Engadget, so make sure you head on over and voice your opinion in his poll. Personally I am all for the jailbreak as it still offers a lot that will not be included in the official App Store. But I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion.
In the meantime, should you feel the need, then jailbreak away! Now its time for me to fire up QuickPwn myself…
It comes with little surprise that Steve Wozniak is sporting a jailbroken iPhone, after all how can we forget the now classic video of Wozniak jailbreaking Kathy Griffin’s 1.1.1 iPhone. That of course was done in the ‘good old days’ using the once simple process found at jailbreakme.com.
Of course, its still nice to see some photographic evidence supporting it. The latest photo comes courtesy of the unofficial iPhone DevTeam’s website and shows Wozniak proudly showing off his “pwned” iPhone complete with the cartoon Steve image on the display.
As someone who is also in full support of jailbreaking and currently using a pwned iPhone 3G, I cannot help but wonder what jailbroken apps he uses.
The previously announced version 2.5 of WinPwn has been made available, its still officially listed as a beta however anyone can go ahead and download. Of course as the WinPwn team states, its beta because that is their way of saying to “use at your own risk.”
Also important to point out is that users must fully uninstall any previous version of WinPwn before installing and running version 2.5. Coming along with the promised added support, version 2.5 features;
You can download the WinPwn version 2.5 here.
I assume someone may find this trick useful, so its worthwhile passing off, however its a trick that I am likely to never use myself. Anyway, for those who have re-arranged your iPhone icons and wanted to easily bring them back to their first boot placement, you can do so with just a few taps on the screen.
To restore your home screen icons to their default placement, simply go to Settings, General, Reset. Once you get to Reset you will see “Reset Home Screen Layout” just click and they will magically re-arrange back.
In addition, once in the Reset section, you will also have a few more that may be a little more useful such as the “Reset Location Warnings” option.
Of course, what I would find more useful, is a little trick that would allow me to quickly re-arrange my home screen icons to my preferred placement after I update or install any apps.
